Kayak fishing Addiction

In the Spotlight:

Kayak Angler, Chad Skeeles

A.K.A. Flatspro

Hello my name is Chad Skeeles and here’s my story. I grew up in Jacksonville, Florida moving to Gulf Breeze, Florida in 1986. Fishing has always been a part of my life. I grew up wade fishing the grass flats of Santa Rosa sound or spending all day on the pier. Tournament fishing has always been one of the things that I really enjoy doing, whether it’s a local weekend fishing rodeo or a professional redfish series tournament. I spent about 5 years fishing the FLW redfish series and the IFA tour and always owned boats. After the 2010 season I sold my boat, it was getting too expensive.

I told myself that there had to be a way I could still fish. On a weekend in November I was watching Americana Outdoors and saw the IFA kayak redfish tour. Then the light switch went off in my head! I started demoing and pricing kayaks. I set a budget of $1000. Unfortunately the kayak I settled on as being the best for me was the Hobie Outback. So I proceeded to save more money and in Feb of 2011 I made my purchase. Perfect now I had two weeks until my first tournament. At this point I spent every available moment on the water fishing for trout and redfish. After my first Catch Photo & Release (CPR) tournament I was amazed at the fact that the kayak community was the polar opposite of the boating community.

I proceeded to complete my first year fishing the Gulf Coast Kayak Fishisng Association's (GCKFA) spring tournament and the Inshore Fishing Associations (IFA) kayak tour in which I finished 4th at the championship in Chalmette Louisiana. After that year I have been doing everything I can to help promote the sport of kayak fishing.

Oliver Hurst and I have stepped up to provide seminars for kayak fishing, at the Hook Line and Sinker seminar series at Flounders on Pensacola Beach. I hope you were able to attend the Pensacola Beach Kayak and Paddle Board Festival held last spring at Flounders. We (Ollie and I) are the stand alone guides for pensacolakayakcharters.com which is backed by Hot Spots bait and tackle. One of the things that I love most is taking people fishing that have never been on a kayak. Once you see their face light up when they are getting dragged around by a fish you know that they are hooked. I have made a lot of great friends through kayak fishing and pray to make many more through charters and local events that the Gulf Coast Kayak Fishing Association puts on.
